Everyone relates eggnog with the holidays. But what about those of us that are vegan and don’t drink? Or what if you wanted to share your eggnog with the kiddos? A no Alcohol, Vegan Eggnog is not only something everyone will enjoy, but you won’t be compromising in taste in any way. Scout’s promise!

What’s Eggnog?

Eggnog is a sweet, dairy-based milk punch, made with eggs. Serve it with or without alcohol, and enjoy it cold or warm depending on your mood.

In Europe, Canada, and all over the U.S., it’s a holiday tradition that’s celebrated during the colder months, closer to Thanksgiving.

Most culinary historians agree that eggnog originated from a medieval British drink called posset. Posset is made from hot milk which is then curdled using wine or ale. Because of the alcohol, it was first used as a remedy for the flu!

People say that President George Washington served alcoholic eggnog (his own recipe) to visitors. His recipe included:

  • 1-quart cream
  • 1-quart milk
  • 12 tablespoons sugar
  • 1 pint Brandy
  • Half Pint Rye Whiskey
  • Half Pint Jamaican Rum
  • Half Pint Sherry

The eggnog recipe calls to mix the alcohol first and then separate the whites and the yolks of the eggs. Then add sugar to the beaten yolks. Mix well and then add the milk and cream. Beat the egg whites until still and mix them into the mixture and cool it.

Most importantly, you can update the recipe to suit your own likes, dislikes, and more importantly, your diet. Let’s get started on the no-alcohol, vegan eggnog recipe!

Note: Kids can enjoy this no-alcohol, vegan eggnog drink as well, but if you worry about nut allergies, I will give you a nut-free version towards the end! Cool? Let’s start.

How to make No Alcohol, Vegan Eggnog at home!

Equipment Needed:

High-Speed Blender (don’t use the BlendJet for this one)

Ingredients:

  • 15 oz of full-fat Coconut Milk (you can use Oat milk or Soy milk if you prefer)
  • 0.5 cups of soaked raw cashews
    • Soak them for 1 hour but if you’re pressed for time, you can boil them for 15 minutes
  • 3 tablespoons of granulated sugar, or you can use maple or agave syrup
  • 0.25 teaspoon nutmeg and cinnamon (ground powder)
  • 0.5 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Pinch of ground cloves

The process of making this holiday favorite is very simple. First, blend all of the ingredients, making sure that the cashews are blended thoroughly. Keep the mixture in the fridge to thicken if you want to enjoy the Eggnog cold. Otherwise, you can reheat it to serve it hot! Top it off with some coconut whipped cream and enjoy!

Bonus: Eggnog Coffee

I haven’t tried this but I have to say I’m very curious. Some people have used the Eggnog mixture as a creamer for their coffee. All you need to do is brew some black coffee to your liking and then add the Eggnog as a creamer. Finally, adjust the sweetness and spiciness (adding more or less sugar) and enjoy.

Nut or Soy Allergy?

If your kids want to try the Alcohol-Free, Vegan Eggnog but you worry about nut allergies, you can substitute Silken Tofu for the cashews.

In my case if there are any issues with soy products, feel free to use: Frozen Yogurt, Vegan Vanilla Ice Cream, or Raw Coconut Meat.

What Does Alcohol-Free, Vegan Eggnog Taste Like?

I’ll have to say the jury is out on this one. For every person that I ask, I get a different reaction. If you enjoy custard, then this is definitely something you’ll want to try at home. Some say it also tastes like melted ice cream. I say it tastes like the winter.

Why?

All the spices plus the sweetness remind you of a warm hug, after being out in the snow all day. Plus, it’s a great way to warm up!

Coconut Free, No Alcohol, Vegan Eggnog (No Soy)

Just in case there are a few guests or family members that aren’t fans of coconut (I can’t imagine why), then try this equally delicious recipe:

  • 0.5 Cups of Raw Cashews (soaked)
  • 1.5 Cups of unsweetened Almond Milk
  • 5-6 soft-pitted Medjool dates
  • 1 Teaspoon of Pure Vanilla Extract
  • 0.25 Teaspoon of ground Nutmeg
  • 1/8 Teaspoon of ground Cloves
  • 1/8 Teaspoon of Salt

The process is exactly the same but since it’ll be warm coming out from the blender, you can add ice to the blender as you mix it, to serve it cold immediately.

The holidays are a time to let loose and enjoy great food, eat sweets and be merry! While these Eggnog recipes are technically a healthier option than traditional recipes, everything is better in moderation. Enjoy these recipes and share some of your own!
